MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — West Virginia continues to make a strong push on the recruiting trail under Ross Hodge, and another highly touted prospect is now on the Mountaineers’ radar. According to a post on his X account, four-star shooting guard Malik Olajuwon has received an offer from West Virginia.
If the last name sounds familiar, it should. Malik is the son of NBA Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon, widely regarded as one of the greatest centers in basketball history. But the younger Olajuwon is carving out a name for himself as one of the top guards in the 2027 recruiting class.
The 6-foot-4, 170-pound Canadian native is rated as a four-star prospect, a top-85 player nationally, and the No. 10 shooting guard in the 2027 class according to the industry composite rankings. He currently attends Fort Bend Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas, and has become one of the fastest-rising prospects in the country.
Olajuwon has put together an impressive summer on the EYBL circuit while playing for JL3, averaging 12.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.2 combined steals and blocks per game for one of the top teams on the circuit. He’s also carried that momentum into Peach Jam, the premier AAU event in the country, where West Virginia’s coaching staff is in attendance. Through his first three games, Olajuwon is averaging 15.3 points per game while helping lead JL3 to a 2-1 record.
Earlier this summer, Olajuwon represented Canada at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup, where he played alongside fellow West Virginia recruiting targets Deng Ngor and Javion Tyndale. He averaged 9.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game while shooting an efficient 57 percent from the field, further showcasing his ability to perform on the international stage.
The Mountaineers are joining an increasingly competitive recruitment. Olajuwon already holds offers from TCU, Texas Tech, Auburn, Wake Forest, Mississippi State, SMU, and Minnesota, with more high-major programs expected to enter the mix. West Virginia’s offer comes at the perfect time as Olajuwon’s stock continues to rise following an outstanding summer.
It’s also another sign that Ross Hodge and his staff are expanding their recruiting footprint. West Virginia has been heavily involved with several top Canadian prospects over the past few months, and the offer to Olajuwon continues that trend. Landing a player of his caliber won’t be easy, but the Mountaineers have officially entered the race for one of the top shooting guards in the 2027 class.
