WVU football: Legendary QB Will Grier retires from NFL

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — A former West Virginia star is calling it a career. The Carolina Panthers announced Wednesday that quarterback Will Grier has been placed on the team’s reserve/retired list after informing the organization that he has decided to retire from the NFL at 31 years old. Grier had returned to Carolina this offseason, the same franchise that selected him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, but has now decided to step away from football before the start of training camp.

Grier’s NFL journey took him all around the league. After being drafted by the Panthers, he spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, and eventually returned to both Dallas and Carolina. He appeared in two regular-season games during his career, both coming with the Panthers as a rookie in 2019. Grier finished his NFL career completing 28 of 52 passes for 228 yards while making two starts.

Although his professional career never unfolded the way many expected, Grier will always be remembered as one of the greatest quarterbacks in West Virginia football history. After transferring from Florida, he immediately transformed the Mountaineers’ offense and became one of the most prolific passers the program has ever seen. During his two seasons in Morgantown, Grier threw for 7,354 yards and 71 touchdowns while completing more than 67 percent of his passes. In 2018, he finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting after throwing for 3,864 yards and 37 touchdowns, earning Second Team All-Big 12 honors. The year before, he threw for 3,490 yards and 34 touchdowns despite missing the final four games due to injury and was named the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year.

While his NFL career was brief, there’s no denying the impact Grier made at West Virginia. He helped return the Mountaineers to national relevance, delivered countless memorable moments for fans, and remains one of the most talented quarterbacks to ever wear the Old Gold and Blue. His name will forever be etched among the all-time greats in program history, and he’ll always be remembered as one of the most exciting players to take the field in Morgantown.
