Malloy Smith is one of three freshman in UNC's 2026 men's basketball recruiting class. He's the third Smith to play Tar Heel basketball.

The 2026-27 UNC men's basketball roster is starting to finalize, most recently with the official signing of Buffalo transfer guard Angelo Brizzi.

New head coach Michael Malone landed several experienced transfers, including previous Power Four starters in Terrence Brown and Neoklis Avdalas. North Carolina also welcomes a 3-man high school recruiting class of Maximo Adams, Kevin Thomas and Malloy Smith.

The Smith commitment carries a family legacy. Malloy's older brother, KJ and father, Kenny, both donned Tar Heel jerseys.

In a recent appearance of the "Locked On" podcast" with Isaac Schade, Malloy Smith delivers a funny answer when asked about playing with his dad and brother.

"I'm going to take a mid-range jump shot," Smith answered with a laugh. "They can get the rebound. There's offensive rebounds, just incase I miss, but I'm taking a mid-range jump shot."

Malloy played his high school ball at Mater Dei High School, a famous sports factory located in Santa Ana, Calif. He likely will come off the bench plenty in his first year at UNC, but has plenty of opportunity to find his rotation spot early.

Kenny is the most established basketball player in his family, highlighted by First Team All-ACC honors in 1987, then a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team and two NBA Championships. If you watch the NBA, Kenny now frequents halftime shows with Shaquille O'Neal, Charles Barkley and Ernie Johnson.

KJ played at North Carolina from 2018-21, starting just four of his 51 appearances and largely appearing in a reserve role. The Tar Heels made a Sweet 16 during KJ's first season in Chapel Hill, then ran into COVID and exited in the Round of 64.

Right now, we know that Malloy Smith will be the one amongst his family taking that final jump shot. Will Smith have his fair share of clutch moments in continuing his family's legacy at UNC?
