A traveler was left stunned after discovering she was the only passenger aboard a United Airlines flight, leading to a memorable journey that included personalized announcements from the captain, a cockpit visit after landing, and even sandbags being loaded onto the aircraft.
The experience was shared on Reddit by user u/Sufficient_Fudge_280 in the r/unitedairlines subreddit under the title: “Somehow the only person on my flight and the pilot was such a goofy goober.” The post has had 65,000 upvotes since it was shared in late June.
Speaking to Newsweek, the traveler, who did not share her name, said she is based in Alabama and travels frequently for work.
“We’re both millennials [the original poster and the pilot]. I’m based in Huntsville [Alabama] and work for BMW corporate so I travel a good bit. He [the pilot] is based out of Houston,” she said, adding that “he had me laughing the entire time being goofy over the intercom and he’s the funniest pilot United employs.”
The Reddit post included photos showing rows of empty seats, the pilot posing with the passenger in the cockpit after landing, and another image of the pilot at what appeared to be an airport.
In the post’s caption, the traveler clarified that no aviation rules had been broken. “EDIT TO ADD; THE PLANE WAS LANDED AND DONE WITH TAXI BEFORE I GOT TO BE IN THE COCKPIT. NO FAA RULES WERE BROKEN,” she wrote.
While having an entire commercial flight to yourself may sound like a traveler’s dream, such experiences are increasingly rare.
According to a March 2026 report from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global air passenger demand is expected to more than double by 2050. The organization said growth will vary by region, with Asia-Pacific and Africa forecast to see the fastest expansion, while Europe and North America are expected to grow at a slower pace.
The unusual flight in the viral Reddit post came after significant travel disruption.
“The only other people on the flight were he and I, one flight attendant and his co-pilot. The flight was originally meant to leave at 11 a.m. and left at 10:30 p.m. I was the only person who didn’t reschedule to the next day because I had to get to Houston for a meeting the next morning,” the Reddit poster told Newsweek.
Despite carrying just one passenger, the aircraft was still scheduled to operate.
“The plane had to be in Houston for a flight the next morning, so it was going with or without any passengers anyways. I sat in the front seat and kicked my feet up lol,” she said.
What began as a one-off aviation oddity ultimately led to an unexpected friendship.
“One of his coworkers saw the post and sent it to him, thinking it was hilarious. So, he reached out to say ‘hi’ and assure me he wasn’t in trouble and thought the whole thing was hilarious,” she said. “We’ve become pretty good friends over the last month; we have a ton in common.”
‘Shout Out Captain Scott’
The passenger praised the pilot in the caption of the Reddit post, writing: “Shout out Captain Scott! He let me sit in the cockpit after we landed and I even got my own personalized pre flight announcements. Also, they had to add sandbags to the cabin bc [because] the plane was too light with only one passenger.”
The Reddit post also sparked plenty of comments about the captain’s appearance.
“About half the comments are about how he looks just like Shane Gillis [the comedian and actor] and he’s actually a huge fan lol… He would die [if they got to meet],” the passenger told Newsweek.
