The Trump administration will allow U.S. airlines to begin offering direct flights to Lebanon following President Donald Trump's meeting Tuesday with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, whom Trump praised for efforts to strengthen and reshape his country.
"After meeting with the President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, who has done a remarkable job working to transform his Country, I am hereby directing my Administration to allow all U.S. airline carriers to fly directly to Lebanon so that Americans can easily visit this beautiful land," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
"Hopefully, other Countries will do the same. Enjoy!" he added.
The move would clear the way for direct commercial air service between the United States and Lebanon for the first time in decades.
Since 1985, U.S. airlines have been prohibited from operating direct flights to Lebanon because of security concerns, although previous administrations later eased some restrictions to permit ticket sales involving connecting flights while keeping the direct-flight ban in place.
Trump announced the decision after hosting Aoun at the White House. The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and Lebanon's efforts to rebuild state institutions following years of political and economic instability.
Trump commended Aoun, a former commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces who took office earlier this year, for his efforts in Lebanon.
It was not immediately clear when direct flights would begin or which U.S. airlines, if any, would launch service. The administration also did not immediately announce whether additional regulatory or security approvals would be required before flights could commence.
The State Department continues to maintain a Level 4 "Do Not Travel" advisory for Lebanon because of ongoing security risks, including terrorism, kidnapping, and armed conflict.
