Ten days in a foster home made all the difference for a rescue dog who arrived “scared and unsure” after being found abandoned in a crate outside.
Brooklyn Washburn and her best friend, Billie Wensveen, welcomed Betty and her puppies into their home on June 27 after Mikey’s Chance Canine Rescue put out an urgent plea for a foster family. Washburn told Newsweek that Betty and her puppies had been found abandoned in a metal crate as temperatures reached 90 to 100 degrees.
“She was pretty dehydrated,” she said. “Animal control took her and began looking for a rescue to pull her, as she would not have done well in the shelter environment.”
Terrified of her new surroundings, Betty hesitated in her new foster home. A July 8 TikTok video posted to Washburn’s account, @brooklynwashburn, showed the nervous dog cowering in the corner of her kennel. But over the first 10 days, the patience of Washburn and Wensveen, and a safe place to rest with her puppies, helped transform the fearful dog.
By day 10, Betty was wagging her tail and seeking affection, revealing a completely different side of herself than when she first arrived. No longer hiding in the corner, she had begun to trust the people caring for her, finally letting her true personality shine through.
Betty’s progress shows just how much a safe environment can mean for a dog recovering from trauma.
Fostering gives pets the chance to decompress in a calm home environment rather than the stressful animal shelter, where they can begin building trust, resilience and confidence, an article from the Humane World for Animals states. The organization says even dogs that are initially withdrawn often “come out of their shells” once they feel safe and cared for.
For Betty, that change happened in just over a week. Part of the video shows the dog greeting her foster parents, soaking up affection and leaning into the attention as if she never wants the moment to end.
Washburn and Wensveen will continue fostering Betty while she nurses her puppies. Once the puppies are weaned, Betty will be spayed, vaccinated and officially available for adoption through Mikey’s Chance Canine Rescue.
Despite the attention Betty has received online, Washburn said no one has submitted an adoption application yet. Those interested in giving Betty a permanent home can apply through the rescue organization’s website once she becomes available.
For now, the focus remains on helping Betty continue to heal and build confidence. After arriving frightened and unsure, she is learning that she is finally safe.
