Will Smith’s name has appeared in a legal battle between his wife Jada Pinkett Smith and former friend Bilaal Salaam.
Salaam, also known as Brother Bilaal, is demanding that the actor testify in his lawsuit against Pinkett Smith, accusing her of organizing a defamation campaign against him following an incident at Smith’s 2021 birthday celebration.
Jada does not want to involve Will in the case
In email correspondence attached to a filing from Jada Pinkett Smith’s legal team dated July 15, Salaam, who is representing himself in the case, wrote that he wanted to spend the first ten minutes of a 30-minute conversation with her lawyers discussing his request to question Will Smith.
Jada Pinkett Smith’s attorney stated in the filing that her client "denies all such allegations" and believes that regarding Will Smith, "there is no need for a meeting or agreement."
"Mr. Smith is not a party to this litigation," the attorney continued in her email response to Salaam. "To the extent you seek his deposition, you must comply with the applicable procedures for obtaining discovery from a nonparty. As far as we are aware, no subpoena has been served on Mr. Smith."
Seeking $3 million in damages
Salaam is seeking $3 million in damages from Pinkett Smith. He accuses her of intentionally causing emotional distress and claims that she and her associates threatened him at Smith’s 53rd birthday celebration nearly five years ago.
In the lawsuit filed in November, Salaam alleges that Pinkett Smi*h told him that if he continued talking about her private matters, he would "disappear or get a bullet."
Pinkett Smith allegedly then demanded that Salaam sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), saying he would "see what happens" otherwise, after which seven members of her entourage escorted him to his car.
Salaam also claims in the lawsuit that a "retaliatory campaign" was launched against him because he refused to help Pinkett Smi*h with crisis management after her husband slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards.
He claims the alleged campaign caused him to develop PTSD, gain 100 pounds, and suffer from high blood pressure and diabetes.
In a July 15 filing, Jada Pinke*t Smi*h’s attorney asked Salaam to provide recordings of phone calls that he claims are key evidence of the alleged intimidation and threats.
"Plaintiff has not unequivocally agreed to produce recordings," the motion read, "he has not stated whether responsive recordings with two of the alleged participants exist, and he refuses to state whether he will produce medical records supporting the physical and emotional injuries for which he seeks recovery."
