Wildlife photographers don't have an easy job, and they spend countless hours hoping to see a once-in-a-lifetime encounter. The cool thing about their quest is that sometimes the stars align in the most incredible way, and they capture a remarkable animal.
In this video, a photographer heard rumors that a "mega-rare" bird was nearby, so she set out to find it. And she was awarded a bird who had never been seen in the UK before. Take a look at this beauty!
TikToker @oliviakatephotography shared an incredible video of a heron who's not only stunning to see in real life, but the location where she captured images and video of the bird is so very rare.
It wasn't easy to find the animal right away after hearing where the bird had previously been spotted. She really wanted to get some video and photos, and when she finally saw the Western Reef Heron, the incredible footage was exactly what she got.

Interesting Facts About the Western Reef Heron
How cool it would have been to see a Western Reef Heron, especially since this bird isn't typically found in the UK. According to experts, that's not exactly where this bird is known to live.
Animalia explains that the Western Reef Heron is typically found in southern Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia, particularly along the coasts of the Red Sea in Africa and the Persian Gulf in Iran. It is sometimes found in the Lakshadweep Island and Sri Lanka, with some breeding in the Canary Islands and a small number in Spain.
Animalia goes on to explain that the Western Reef Heron can be seen in a few color variations, including all white, dark gray, shades of gray, or parti-colored in white and gray.
The Audubon adds that these birds are a "very rare visitor along the East Coast" and have a shape similar to the Snowy Egret, and are about the same size, but they've got a longer bill. Fully grown, they're around 23 to 25 inches and are similar in size to the Mallard duck. They don't make much noise, other than a grumble, if you get close to their nest.
It's not surprising that this photographer is so excited not only to see the Western Reef Heron in real life, but also to see it so far from where it would have been a more likely experience.
