July 21 (UPI) -- A famous bald eagle who went missing from her California nest was found unable to fly after an attack, but veterinarians said she seems to have evaded major injuries.
Jackie, a bald eagle who, along with partner Shadow, became famous as the subjects of a livestream camera set up by Friends of Big Bear Valley, went missing from her nest last week, and was rescued Saturday by the L.A. County Parks & Recreation San Dimas Raptor Rescue Team after being found stranded on the ground.
Friends of Big Bear Valley released a statement Sunday saying experts are confident the rescued eagle is the missing Jackie.
Jackie is currently being cared for at the Ojai Raptor Center, where officials said she seems to have evaded broken bones or other major injuries in an apparent attack by two younger eagles. Further tests are being conducted to determine whether the underweight raptor is healthy enough to return to her nest.
In the meantime, Friends of Big Bear Valley said Shadow is doing a good job of protecting and caring for the pair's fledgling eaglets, Sandy and Luna.
"Jackie is a strong eagle and we as a community will get through this," Friends of Big Bear Valley wrote on social media. "Meanwhile, Shadow is an excellent mate and father, he continues to care for Sandy and Luna while protecting the nest and territory."
