The White House Flickr photostream is typically dominated by official photographs of President Donald Trump and White House events.
Following the FIFA World Cup final, however, the administration uploaded dozens of official images from the match and the tournament's inaugural halftime show, causing photographs of BTS, Justin Bieber, Shakira and Madonna to appear alongside the administration's usual stream of presidential images.
Because Flickr’s photostream feature displays newly published images in reverse chronological order, the celebrity photos appeared interspersed with images of Trump from the event.
The performers were photographed as part of the World Cup halftime show rather than in connection with White House activities.
The uploads nevertheless placed images of some of the world's most recognizable entertainers into the same official White House photo feed that is ordinarily used to document the president and his administration.
The juxtaposition comes during a highly polarized political climate in which entertainers often seek to avoid actions or imagery that could be interpreted as implying a political association or endorsement, especially with someone as divisive as Trump. Trump’s White House has been known to glom onto pop culture and artists in an attempt to mainstream and normalize his extreme policies.
