Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha have welcomed a new baby, a boy named Alec Neel Vance. And amid rumors that Vance is still doing whatever he can to get US President Donald Trump's support for a possible presidential run of his own, new reports indicate the baby almost had a different name.
That's right, Hollywood insider Rob Shuter claims that the newborn almost had a very different name.

"J.D. floated the idea of naming the baby Donald," one Washington insider told the gossip columnist's Naughty But Nice. "He thought it would be the ultimate tribute to President Trump. J.D. knows the President appreciates loyalty, and he believed it would be a meaningful gesture."
The same sources said his wife, Usha, just wasn't having it.
"She shut it down-politely, but firmly," another insider revealed. "Usha wanted their son's name to reflect their family, not make a political statement. She wasn't about to turn her newborn into a headline before he could even walk."
Alec Neel Vance is the first child born to a sitting U.S. vice president in more than 150 years.
"J.D. knew when to surrender," a Republican insider explained. "He may be Vice President of the United States, but at home he knows exactly who gets the final vote."
This comes after Rob Shuter himself reported last year that Trump expects to be asked to be the baby's godfather. According to his sources, "Trump absolutely assumes he'll be the godfather," I was told. "In his mind, it's a given. But no one has formally invited him into that role."
At the time of the report sources indicated the matter hadn't been brought up. "It wasn't a question - it was more of an expectation," Shuter said, "That's classic Trump. He assumes proximity equals privilege."
Vance and his wife, Usha, have three older kids: Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel. There's no confirmation yet about whether they've even picked a godfather. "They're focused on the baby, not politics," Shuter added then, "They haven't chosen godparents yet - and they're very aware of the optics."
"Everything around them is scrutinized," the columnist also said, "Even a godparent becomes a headline."
Last year Usha and JD Vance had to contend with rumors that their marriage was on the rocks. It all started when Usha Vance was seen without her ring on during an official event alongside first lady Melania Trump.
At the time, a spokesperson for the second lady told People that Usha Vance is "a mother of three young children, who does a lot of dishes, gives lots of baths, and forgets her ring sometimes."
Vance addressed the rumors head-on during an interview with NBC News on December 5, 2025, saying. "I think that we kind of get a kick out of it," adding, "With anything in life, you take the good with the bad. You accept that there are some sacrifices and there are some very good things that come along with it, too. But our marriage is as strong as it's ever been, and I think Usha's really taken to it, and it's been kind of cool to see how she's developed and evolved in this new role."
