After a busy spring between spring practices and recruiting visits, things have quieted down for Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin and his staff. Currently, the NCAA recruiting calendar is in its dead period, but the discussion surrounding recruits never really ends.
Recruiting in the Class of 2027 is winding up with most players already committed, taking care of that ahead of their senior season, which is right around the corner. However, in the Classes of 2028 and 2029, recruiting visits are going to pick up, and offers are going to be extended sooner rather than later. The Hokies are always looking ahead under Franklin, and that includes them getting into the mix for a Class of 2029 signal-caller.
The Hokies have entered the mix for 2029 quarterback Bear Woods, who hails from Anderson, South Carolina. The 6-foot-4, 190-pounder is seeing his recruiting begin to pick up, and Virginia Tech and QB coach Danny O'Brien, along with Franklin, are already in the mix. Expect Woods to make his way to Blacksburg this fall for a game and take in the atmosphere.
Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz takes a shot at the Big Ten
SEC Media Days began in Florida on Monday, and when it comes to the conference, there are always some good quotes that come out for a conference that hasn't had a team in the National Championship Game in three years. The Big Ten has won the last three natty's, and Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz didn't miss an opportunity to take a subtle swipe amid SEC struggles.
According to Brett McMurphy, Drinkwitz said that a big part of the Big Ten's CFP success and winning the last three national titles is because "When you don't play a (non-conference) A4 game.'' Yeah, that's why they have had so much success. He nailed it. Mind you, this is coming from a coach who lost his bowl game last season to Virginia, 13-7.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey drops an eye-opening quote to begin media days on Monday
The SEC has been the most successful conference of any in the country. Just ask them; they'll tell you. That includes Sankey. On Monday morning, the boss had a take on the conference and the College Football Playoff that likely will not draw a great reaction across the country.
“I’m actually one who believes competitors want a great challenge,'' said Sankey. "We have heard about strength of schedule, strength of record. We had what I would call an unsatisfactory conversation with College Football Playoff staff (at spring meetings). We have questions about them understanding the strength (of the SEC).”
That's some take. Actually, it's some take from a commissioner who has not had a team make the CFP title game since the field was expanded to 12 teams. I mean, the ACC had a team, Miami, reach the championship game last season. The Hurricanes were not even a team that played for the ACC title last December. Oh, did we forget to mention that Miami went on the road and took down Texas A&M in College Station in the first round? How about taking down Ole Miss in the semifinals? Those teams must have been tired from the daunting SEC regular season they had to endure.
Let's not forget that the last three National Champions have been Big Ten schools. Who have those schools beaten in those title games? Washington, Notre Dame, and Miami. Don't see too many SEC teams in those championship games.
