If there is one good thing about the 2026 Virginia Tech football schedule under James Franklin, it's that the schedule to begin the season is favorable in terms of their three non-conference games before ACC play begins. For first-year head coach James Franklin, that's huge.
The Hokies will host VMI and Old Dominion to begin the season in the first two weeks before heading to Maryland for their first true road game. After that, ACC play begins with another trip up North, this time to Boston College.
On paper, this is a very winnable game for the Hokies. Truth be told, there is no better opponent in the conference to open with for Virginia Tech. However, they have to go out and win the game on the field, as paper doesn't mean anything. However, BC coach Bill O'Brien may have pointed the Hokies to a path to a victory.
Boston College coach Bill O'Brien lays out how Virginia Tech can get an early-season win
Like most coaches this time of the year, O'Brien hinted that there is a lot of work that needs to be done. Why? Well, like so many other teams, there was a lot of roster turnover from last year between the Transfer Portal and the high school recruits.
"We have a brand-new team,'' said O'Brien. "We have basically about 50 new players. We have about 25 guys out of the portal, 25 guys in high school recruiting. We have six new coaches, including defensive coordinator Ted Roof. We also have a new general manager in Kenyatta Watson. It's a brand-new organization, a brand-new team from last year, and we're excited about that.''
The same could be said about Franklin and Virginia Tech, but it feels like the Hokies are in a better position to have success with the talent brought in. However, the Eagles get three games to figure things out as Virginia Tech does before the Sept. 26 battle at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, and it'll be a battle of two new-looking rosters. If the Hokies can be ahead of schedule in terms of getting through the first three weeks healthy and rolling, then it could be a fun weekend in Boston.
