Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy continues to draw attention across the NFL. Now, former coach Jon Gruden has revealed what he believes makes Bieniemy a special coach and dropped an alarming opinion about him that puts rivals on high alert.

Jon Gruden praised Bieniemy’s ability to communicate with players and deliver his message effectively. He also highlighted the Chicago Bears’ running game, which caught his attention after Bieniemy’s recent work with the team before returning to Kansas City on January 23 this year.

“One thing I know about Bieniemy is he’s a great motivator, a great leader. He can control the room,” said Gruden on the July 17 episode of his podcast. “Sometimes you need a coach that can walk in and say what needs to be said, and he says it with a really good flair.”

Gruden also praised Bieniemy’s work with the Bears, especially the team’s running game.

“What I love about Bieniemy is he was with the Bears last year,” Gruden said on his @Jon Gruden YouTube Channel. “Ask me my favorite thing I watched in the offseason. Jake, it’s the Chicago Bears running game.”

Eric Bieniemy has a long history with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he served as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022. During that time, he worked with Patrick Mahomes and helped lead one of the NFL’s most successful offenses.

In 2022, Bieniemy helped the Chiefs win Super Bowl LVII, and the offense finished first in the NFL in scoring at 29.2 points per game.

However, Gruden’s praise for Bieniemy’s work with the Bears comes after a strong season from Chicago’s running game. In 2025, Bieniemy helped oversee a rushing attack that ranked third in the NFL in rushing yards per game with 144.5.

Under his guidance, D’Andre Swift recorded a career-high 1,087 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns, while rookie Kyle Monangai finished with 783 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

Gruden’s comments highlight Bieniemy’s ability to connect with players and improve an offense.

After his successful run with the Chiefs and recent work with the Bears’ running game, Bieniemy continues to earn respect around the NFL.

After earning praise for his coaching style, Bieniemy also has a clear message for the Chiefs as they look to improve.

Eric Bieniemy’s message on fixing Chiefs’ fundamentals

Bieniemy believes the Chiefs need to return to the basics after facing problems last season. In a recent interview with The Athletic, Bieniemy said the team must improve its fundamentals and fix the small mistakes that affected its performance, ranking them No.20 in total offense, averaging 320.6 yards.

“I know this sounds very high school-ish, this answer I’m about to give you,” Bieniemy said. “We’ve got to get back to doing the fundamental things the right way.”

He explained that talent and coaching are not enough if a team fails to execute the basics. Bieniemy stressed that players must focus on the details that help a team succeed.

“If we can’t do those things the right way, it don’t matter who the hell we play,” Bieniemy added. “So we’ve got to make sure we address those issues and get back to the bread and butter of how this game was played.”

During his coaching career, he has worked with top players like Patrick Mahomes and Adrian Peterson while maintaining high expectations, and his message shows that the Chiefs are focused on correcting mistakes and building a stronger foundation moving forward.
