The USMNT suffered a devastating exit to their FIFA World Cup campaign at the Round of 16 stage, going out to Belgium in a 4-1 blowout. And while some may say that it was expected considering the kind of talent they were up against, Landon Donovan believes the fact that the USMNT struggle to keep up with the best teams is down to something much deeper.
The US Soccer legend claimed that clubs in the country have simply made soccer less accessible due to the kind of fees parents are expected to pay. Donovan cited his own example, claiming that his own mother could not have afforded the kind of fees that youth clubs in the country tend to charge today, per a post on X by USMNT Only.
“I grew up in Southern California in a 900 sq. feet home with a single mom who is a special ed. teacher. The reality is, if someone hadn’t paid for me, if someone hadn’t paid for me to play club soccer, I would not have been sitting here today. Forget about $3000 a year, my mom couldn’t afford $300 a year. They are missing out on a lot of players,” he said.
Donovan revealed that only 2% of USMNT players tend to come from households with annual incomes more than $50k, claiming that soccer simply needs to become more accessible in the US.
“All these youth clubs are grinding every penny out of every family. They have to use the hotels that our club tells them they have to use because the club’s getting a kickback from it. They have to use the insurance company…This is ridiculous. Instead of 5 grand a year, let’s day $500 a year,” he said.
The US ranks third in the world when it comes to population, but its best finish at a World Cup came in 1930, when they won the bronze medal. They lost to Germany in the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup, which remains their best finish in the modern era.
Under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, the USMNT arrived at the 2026 tournament intent on playing a more expansive brand of football that relied on controlled possession. It worked well until they were put against a much better team in Belgium, where the lack of quality became evident.
The ‘pay-to-play’ model that exists in the country has been criticized in the past by several other personalities as well, and there is little doubt that vast change may be needed before the USMNT can be expected to compete against the best in the world.
