New systems could be introduced within the next few months
Ukraine continues to develop laser weapon projects, with the Armed Forces expected to receive new systems capable of shooting down Russian Shahed drones within the next few months, according to a statement by Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Brig. Gen. Andrii Lebedenko, during a briefing.
According to Lebedenko, Ukraine is continuing to develop projects related to so-called "weapons of the future." The effort involves both units within the Armed Forces and private Ukrainian companies.
"It already exists today. There are manufacturers and teams, both within the Armed Forces and outside them - private companies that are developing laser weapons," he said.
The general added that Ukrainian systems are already capable of destroying FPV drones, and work is now underway to adapt them for intercepting Russian Shahed drones.
"It can already shoot down FPV drones today and is now being adapted to counter Shaheds. Within the next two to three months, we will have systems that can engage aerial threats even more effectively than machine guns," Lebedenko said.
In early July, former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said Ukraine had already begun testing laser-based air defense systems.
According to him, the technology has already produced its first results, although no further details have been disclosed.
