2026 is lining up to be a huge year for Tom Cruise, who is set to go for another Oscar with his next movie, Digger. The film was written and directed by Alejandro G. Iñárittu, and it’s scheduled to release in theaters later this year on October 2. Cruise brought back one of his most beloved properties earlier this year, when both Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick returned to theaters to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first film. Cruise has confirmed that he will star in a third Top Gun movie for Paramount, but it’s unclear at this time when it will be released. As the biggest movie star in the world, fans are always eager to learn of Cruise’s next project, and one of his most underrated action thrillers that’s almost 40 years old is finally getting a sequel.
News broke this afternoon that Jonathan Levine is in talks to direct a sequel to Cruise’s 1990 action classic, Days of Thunder. Cruise is already on board to star in the project, and he’s also set to produce along with his long-time collaborator, Jerry Bruckheimer. Filming is scheduled to begin early next year. This is especially exciting after the success of F1 last year, and many fans even pushed for a joint sequel where Brad Pitt’s Sonny Hayes and Cruise’s Cole Trickle both star in the film, which would mark their first shared movie since 1994 when they teamed up for Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles. No word yet on if any stars from the original Days of Thunder like Nicole Kidman, Cary Elwes, Michael Rooker, or John C. Reilly will return in the legacy sequel.
Who Directed ‘Days of Thunder’?
Tom Cruise came up with the story for Days of Thunder, and Robert Towne wrote the script for the film with the late Tony Scott directing. Tony Scott is the brother of Ridley Scott, director of Alien, Blade Runner, and The Martian. Jonathan Levine is the director of the upcoming football biopic, Mr. Irrelevant, starring new Superman star David Corenswet. The film is reportedly testing off the charts, further driving home Levine as the perfect choice to helm Days of Thunder 2. Levine also recently directed episodes of the Hulu original series, Nine Perfect Strangers, which stars Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy.
