A new poster for La La Land corrected Ryan Gosling’s flared hand, which he admitted “haunts” him
Lionsgate updated the poster for the film’s 10th anniversary, editing Gosling’s hand to better match Emma Stone’s pose

Ten years since it first charmed audiences, La La Land is debuting a new, slightly different poster.
The poster for the musical romance film features its two leads, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling (as Mia Dolan and Sebastian Wilder, respectively) in the midst of a whimsical dance number overlooking the city of Los Angeles. Arms raised in the air, the pair appear to be lost in the moment.
But Gosling, whose raised hand was notably flared, was not. In a 2024 interview with The Wall Street Journal, Gosling admitted the moment “haunts” him; he didn’t realize that scene would later be used for the film’s poster, so he was instead focused on the dance, and “thought it’d be cool to put my hand like that.”
“Now when I look at it and I have to see it all the time, you know what would have been cooler than this? That,” Gosling added, imitating the gestures. “It just killed the energy that way.”
“It’s just a lazy… I call it ‘La La Hand,’ “ he joked.
Recently, while promoting Project Hail Mary in March, Gosling made a “Hail Mary” to correct the La La Land poster, striking the same pose in the same overlook, but with his hand fixed (and with Project Hail Mary’s Rocky as his new dance partner).
And so after 10 years and heaps of Gosling’s public regret, the new poster — released July 20 — now bears an altered version of Gosling’s hand, edited to more closely resemble Stone’s hand, which simply follows the line of her arm.
“Well, Ryan, you have been heard!” Lionsgate wrote in a press release.
Following the news, Lionsgate EVP and Head of Worldwide Television Marketing Justin Manfredi said Gosling was happy with the poster’s change, “‘cause we let him know and he approved it,” per USA Today. Manfredi added that it’s a little change with a big impact: “It’s like night and day.”
La La Land follows pianist Sebastian and actress Mia, both trying to make it as creatives in Los Angeles, as their unexpected romance threatens to upend their respective upward climbs. The film, initially released in 2016, also starred Rosemarie DeWitt, John Legend, J.K. Simmons, Jessica Rothe and Sonoya Mizuno.
The new poster for La La Land comes ahead of the 10th anniversary of the film’s release. The movie is set for a theatrical re-release on Aug. 16.
