Jackie Chan is officially back in action for the upcoming fourth installment in a martial arts adventure franchise that first began 40 years ago. Chan has been a staple of the martial arts action genre for longer than many of us have even been alive, and while he may now be a septuagenarian, the Rush Hour and Police Story star continues to put his body on the line in the name of cinematic entertainment. And it seems his latest action effort will be no different.
Pitched as "Hong Kong’s answer to Indiana Jones," the Armour of God franchise kicked off way, way back in 1986, with Jackie Chan taking the lead both in front of and behind the camera as director and star. Chan plays Jackie, aka "Asian Hawk," a treasure hunter and adventurer to rival Harrison Ford's beloved fedora-sporting archaeologist who, alongside his friend Alan (Alan Tam), aid a woman (Rosamund Kwan) kidnapped by cultists seeking the titular set of armor, which legend says has mystical powers.
The franchise has since spawned two sequels, the well-received Armour of God II: Operation Condor in 1991, which finds Hawk taking another page out of Indy's book and battling Nazis in a hunt for gold, and the unfortunately panned CZ12, aka Chinese Zodiac in 2012, which sees Hawk setting off on a global quest to find a set of stolen Chinese zodiac bronze heads. Now, Chan is back for Armour of God IV: Ultimatum, with new footage from filming having been revealed and finding the actor and martial artist in action hero adventurer mode as he dons a tactical suit that's almost indistinguishable from a superhero costume.
As confirmed by the footage and photos, filming on Armour of God IV: Ultimatum is now underway in Kazakhstan, marking Chan’s first movie in the region and a first for the Armour of God franchise, which has primarily taken place in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Directed by Robert Kun (Wanted, Day Watch) and produced by Salem Entertainment, it's been confirmed that Armour of God IV: Ultimatum will continue the story of Jackie Chan’s recurring character, the Asian Hawk, who is drawn back into action when a global hunt erupts over an ancient artifact known as the Tumar, carrying a reward of more than $20 million. While unconfirmed, the plan is reportedly to release the action-adventure sequel worldwide in 2027.
