“No other brand comes close.”

“No other brand comes close.”

For soda fans, there are almost too many options to pick from when it comes to big-name brands. Craving a cola? Obviously, there’s Coca-Cola and Pepsi, plus cola-flavored iterations of smaller, better-for-you brands like Olipop and Nixie. When it comes to root beer, sippers can choose from A&W, Mug, or Barq’s, as well as beloved smaller companies like FroStop and Dad’s. If you prefer a fruitier fizz, the options for orange, lemon-lime, and grape sodas can seem endless.

While The Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo dominate the soda aisle, there’s one beloved beverage brand from New Orleans that fans agree puts all other sodas to shame. Louisiana locals declare that Big Shot is the best—and the Southern-based soda might just give the popular pop companies a run for their money.

Why Fans Love Big Shot Soda

In case you aren’t familiar, Big Shot soda is renowned for its incredible, unmatched lineup of flavors. Founded in 1935 in New Orleans, Big Shot is beloved for its iconic tycoon mascot, affordable price tag (it used to cost just 99 cents for a 24-ounce bottle), and unique flavors. The legendary soda is a hot commodity in Louisiana, with limited availability at neighborhood grocery stores, specialty shops, and gas stations

The brand boasts some classic soft drinks including root beer, cola, orange, grape, and cream soda alongside a lineup of more fruity flavors including blackberry cola, peach, strawberry, pineapple-watermelon, and black cherry. But while the cult favorite may be best-known for its fruit flavors, fans agree that Big Shot Root Beer might just take the cake when it comes to the brand’s best beverage.

“Big Shot makes my absolute favorite root beer,” declared one Redditor, who added that “No other brand comes close.” One commenter dubbed it “God tier,” while another echoed the sentiment: “Their root beer might be the best I’ve ever had.”

Outside of root beer, though, you’d be hard pressed to determine which flavor really is the best. Some Redditors argue in favor of Peach, a few wrote Strawberry (especially when paired with chicken from Popeyes), and many are loyal to Black Cherry.

In addition to standard fruit flavors, the brand also boasts more unique offerings like Red Creme (which some describe as bubblegum with notes of vanilla) and Pineapple Blue Bayou. The latter is one of the brands’ signature flavors, and features orange, pineapple, and coconut flavors with a bright blue hue that makes it uber-nostalgic for NOLA locals. Overall, though, the consensus is that any and all of Big Shot’s pineapple flavors are a close-second to root beer, if not the best of them all.

If you want to try Pineapple Blue Bayou or any other beloved Big Shot sodas for yourself, you may have to book a trip to New Orleans to snag the local favorite. However, some Redditors report seeing them across the state of Louisiana, and one user even spotted the coveted brand in Southeast Texas. One thing’s for sure, though: Big Shot is so good, fans would pay good money to have it outside of New Orleans. I might just have to plan a trip for Mardi Gras next year to try it myself.
