Tennessee beat out Ohio State and Ole Miss for a five-star running back, and that’s a good sign for the Volunteers.
Running back David Gabriel Georges committed to Tennessee on Wednesday, and that gives the Volunteers a big, physical back for the future in the 2027 class. He’s 5-foot-11 and 220 pounds, and he’s considered the No. 9 prospect nationally and the No. 2 back in the 2027 class nationally.
Georges has enjoyed a stellar prep career at the Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with 2,852 yards and 41 touchdowns in two seasons. He’s a Quebec, Canada, native, and if he reaches his ceiling with the Volunteers, he could join a rare list as one of the top Canadian-born college football players ever.
Bronko Nagurski, a two-way star who played for Minnesota between 1927 and 1929, was arguably the greatest of them all. Nagurski, who was born in Rainy River, Ontario, also had a stellar NFL career.
More recently, Alabama had a talented wide receiver, John Metchie III of Brampton, Ontario, from 2019 to 2021. Metchie had 155 receptions for 2,081 yards and 14 touchdowns in three years for the Crimson Tide.
Jon Cornish, a former Kansas running back, was another former Canadian player who shined in the NCAA between 2003 and 2006. Cornish rushed for 2,245 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Jayhawks before his CFL career, and Canada has a trophy, the Jon Cornish Trophy, in his honor for the top Canadian in NCAA college football.
Georges could contend for that trophy in the coming years and possibly surpass Cornish’s numbers in the process. Better yet, Georges can help the Vols do what Metchie did for the Tide in 2020: win a national championship. Tennessee has already been to one 12-team College Football Playoff in 2024, and the Vols have been consistent winners for the past five seasons, which bodes well for Georges making an impact in the win column.
