Former top pick and Pro Bowl defender Jadeveon Clowney is still a free agent, but there are four teams in the hunt for the pass rusher ahead of training camps getting fully rolling.
Clowney is coming off a good year for the Dallas Cowboys, where he got 8.5 sacks in 13 games. He did not start many games, only six, but as a rotational veteran, he proved to be quite effective.
However, Clowney is now 33 years old, and while he has aged well and remains an explosive player, there is some hesitation to sign him, as evidenced by his market not developing and his remaining unsigned.
Given how valuable pass rushing production is, Clowney certainly has a future in the league, but he has waited for a deal that reflects his current value.
According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, four teams have expressed interest, and with the season starting in two months, there is finally some movement.
“And after having that production, a former number one overall pick, a guy that’s made plenty of money in his career, it’s like, ‘I know what my value is and I’m not taking anything less than it,'” Garafolo said.
Now, my understanding is there are four teams that have been vying for his services recently, and there is starting to be a little bit more momentum as to when this could get done for Clowney.
“That is what I was told today on him. So, a veteran pass rusher who had an excellent year that maybe we didn’t give enough attention to this past season is going to be there for the taking for a team and very well might be on a team in the near future.”
Clowney has been known as more of a run defender, getting fewer sacks than expected from an elite defender. He is good at setting an edge, though he has started to produce more pass rush in the second half of his career.
Likely, Clowney fits on a contending team that wants a veteran who can create pressure, but a team that needs any kind of help on the defensive line could benefit.
