The Indiana Fever pounded the Connecticut Sun in a 123-88 victory on Wednesday night, July 22. Caitlin Clark led the team with 27 points and 11 assists. Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell scored 22 and 23 points, respectively. The Fever are riding a three-game winning streak in the 2026 WNBA All-Star break, where Boston, Clark, and Mitchell will start in the 2026 WNBA All-Star Game on Saturday, July 25.
All roses, right?
Not entirely.
Clark picked up her seventh technical foul of the season when she and Sun guard Saniya Rivers talked trash back and forth late in the third quarter.
Rivers also received a technical foul, but the headline is that Clark is now one technical foul away from receiving an automatic one-game suspension. The 2024 No. 1 overall pick isn’t losing sleep over it.
“[Rivers] said she was locking me up, so I said, ‘Scoreboard,’ and the ref didn’t like that,” Clark said postgame, per The Athletic’s James Boyd.
“I’m never gonna back down,” Clark said when Boyd asked about a potentially looming suspension. “I think that’s the same thing with the way Kelsey was in the first half, too. She got one in the eye. She’s never gonna back down from a moment. I think just continue to try to control your emotions as best you can.
“That intensity and that fire is what makes me, me, but also knowing my team needs me and finding a good balance of that. I don’t think I’m gonna be playing with that in the back of my head. I think that might hinder my play a little bit, so I think just continuing to be myself and just try to refocus to focusing on my teammates and how I can help them.”
The league rules mandate a $1,500 fine and a one-game suspension on the eighth technical foul of the season.
“A player will be fined $1,500 for each technical received after their 8th, and will receive a one-game suspension for every other technical foul. (For example, a player will receive a $1,500 fine and suspension for their 10th and 12th technical, but only the fine for their 9th and 11th technical.),” Front Office Sports relayed.
Clark joked around when Boyd asked if she feels her eighth tech and one-game suspension is “inevitable,” coyly replying, “I don’t know. I can’t predict the future. You gotta ask the magic 8 ball.”
Over the weekend, Fever head coach Stephanie White said “there are conversations” with Clark about her technical fouls and managing it moving forward.
Clark has been managing a back injury for the entirety of this season and most recently missed two games in late June. Since returning on July 8, she’s been on a minutes restriction. Clark has averaged 20.7 points, 7.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds across 22 games for the 17-10 Fever.
