It’s difficult to imagine that anything is out of reach for Jeff Bezos, the world-famous billionaire founder of Amazon, but up to this point, sports ownership has evaded him.
In 2023, then-Washington Commanders owners Dan and Tanya Snyder reportedly blocked Bezos from bidding, though the Snyders denied that report. Regardless, Bezos ultimately did not pursue buying the Commanders, which sold for just over $6 billion to a group led by Josh Harris.
Bezos is now setting his sights overseas, according to The Guardian’s Matt Hughes and Will Unwin, who report that Bezos is “seeking to buy around 30% of Liverpool.”
“The group led by the former Queens Park Rangers co‑owner Amit Bhatia has made a provisional offer of £1.35bn to buy a stake from Fenway Sports Group (FSG), and is talking to other potential investors over supplying funding,” Hughes and Unwin wrote. “Bezos has a personal fortune of around $257 billion, according to Forbes, making him the fourth-richest person in the world.”
The Financial Times has reported that the Bhatia-led consortium “is in talks” to buy a minority ownership stake in Liverpool FC, and the deal would exceed $6 billion in value. Hughes and Unwin’s report notes that “any deal with Bhatia’s consortium would see Bezos receive equity” in the English Premier League giant.
Liverpool, described correctly by The Athletic’s Nick Miller as “the most successful and most romanticized club in English football,” won its only two Premier League titles in 2020 and 2025. After a fifth-place finish this past season, the Reds named Andoni Iraola as their new head coach in early June. Liverpool will open their 2026-27 Premier League campaign on August 23.
