In the midst of an impressive 12-year run on CBS, The Big Bang Theory has spun off into multiple new stories that have found their own high levels of success on TV. The latest efforts in this venture come with the new streaming spin-off, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, centered on Kevin Sussman's fan-favorite Big Bang supporting character, Stuart Bloom. Known for his job as a comic book shop owner, Stuart will dive into a wild new adventure along with his girlfriend and other close friends, jumping through alternate dimensions to undo a multiversal apocalypse.
Sussman will have a star-studded supporting cast, including Brian Posehn reprising his role as geologist Bert Kibbler, Jon Ross Bowi as physicist Barry Kripke, and Lauren Lapkus as Stuart's girlfriend, Denise. The first trailer for this series, which was released in late June, teased a wild new addition to this massive universe, as Stuart meets alternate versions of himself and learns just how big the universe is outside of his world. Now, as fans get ready to see what this adventure has in store, the first reviews are slowly coming to light.
Rotten Tomatoes released its initial Average Tomatometer Score (critics' score) for HBO Max's Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, and after tallying 16 reviews from critics, 69% of them were positive. This is the lowest Tomatometer score of any show from The Big Bang Theory universe, as the original series boasts an 81% average Tomatometer, and George and Mandy's First Marriage has an 89% average.
Tessa Smith of Mama's Geeky called the series "a fun return to the world of The Big Bang Theory" while also teasing a "fresh, new, and wildly entertaining take" on the characters. AV Club's Noel Murray admitted that the creators "set themselves a challenge" to build something "fresh and meaningful," noting that the show is "not a resounding triumph" but is "not bad." New Musical Express's James Mottram highlighted this series taking "secondary characters and [making] them the stars," setting up how Stuart now "gets to be a failure on a cosmic scale." CBR's Katie Doll also spoke highly of the series, saying it "sounds ridiculous" and that this is "what makes the new HBO Max series a hysterical must-watch."
While the wait continues for only another day for the show to be released in full, the stage is set for what could be the most insane Big Bang Theory chapter to date to join the fray.
