When fans predicted Victor Wembanyama would soon become the new face of the NBA, it turns out they were on to something. The San Antonio Spurs center will be the next cover star of the popular video game NBA 2K.

ESPN’s Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania broke the news on Wednesday, July 22, after weeks of speculation. Wemby will become the first Spur to grace the cover of the global standard edition of the game, although alums like Tony Parker have been on international editions.

The inspiration photo comes from the moment the Spurs clinched their 2026 playoff berth against the Phoenix Suns. Two other Spurs stars get a cameo appearance — Dylan Harper and Devin Vassell.

The alien will be joined by two other breakout stars on the game’s new covers: Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark on the Deluxe Edition and Derrick Rose on the Ultra, wearing a Chicago Bulls jersey. Clark is the first WNBA player to get her own global cover.

“Wembanyama has broken the mold for what a big man can be and keeps breaking it. Clark is pulling up from the logo, not just redefining what range looks like, but the women's game entirely. And Rose changed what it meant to be a point guard…” said Zak Armitage, SVP & GM of NBA 2K, in a release.

Created in 1999 and updated annually, NBA 2K allows players to simulate basketball action, both on and off the court. One of the most popular features is the career mode, which allows users to role-play a player’s trajectory from draft to the retirement ceremony.

Although Wemby is far away from the latter, he is not unaware of the cover’s addition to his legacy.

“To be the face of a game that fuels that hunger for hoops and whose covers immortalize the all-time greats, that’s a dream come true for me,” he said in a statement.

According to 2K, Spurs fans can get a hold of NBA 2K on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch on September 4.
