Southington PD arrests 13-year-old, 20-year-old after man stabbed with screwdriver during 'rideout'

A man and a 13-year-old were arrested on Monday in connection with a “rideout” in Southington where police said a large group of people surrounded a man before assaulting and robbing him in broad daylight.

Officers responded to the area of 503 Main St. around 2 p.m. when multiple people called 911 and reported what was described as a “rideout” involving numerous people on bicycles, e-bikes and mopeds who were reportedly obstructing traffic and creating disturbances on the road, according to Lt. Matthew Hammell of the Southington Police Department.

Police then received reports that a motorcyclist was being assaulted. Investigators later found that a 58-year-old man on a motorcycle became surrounded by the large group before he stopped in the road, Hammell said.

According to Hammell, the man’s cell phone was stolen and he was attacked by multiple people. One person allegedly began repeatedly stabbing the man in the back with a screwdriver, Hammell said.

The victim was taken to an area hospital where he was treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Hammell said.

According to Hammell, officers found 20-year-old Kevin Manuel Rodriguez of Waterbury and a 13-year-old from Cheshire and arrested them in connection with the attack.

Rodriguez was charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault, conspiracy to commit first-degree assault, second-degree assault, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, second-degree riot, unlawful assembly, second-degree threatening and second-degree breach of peace. He was held on a $500,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in New Britain Superior Court on Tuesday.

The 13-year-old was charged with first-degree robbery, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, fourth-degree larceny, third-degree assault, second-degree riot, unlawful assembly and two counts of second-degree breach of peace. The teen was held on an order to detain and was taken to the Hartford Juvenile Detention Center, Hammell said.

“Rideouts,” which are sometimes also referred to as “bikeouts,” have become a growing trend around the nation. They often involve a number of teens or young adults on bikes or mopeds and the disruption of traffic.

Videos of the gatherings are often posted on social media. In some states, they have also erupted into violence.
