A Connecticut teenager was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash late Sunday on Interstate 91 in North Haven, where state police said he ignored a highway closure from a previous crash and struck a state vehicle.

The crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. on I-91 North prior to Exit 13 where the highway was shut down for a separate crash involving a motorcycle, according to Connecticut State Police.

A 17-year-old Wallingford boy riding a 2018 KTM 390 allegedly ignored the highway closure where traffic was being diverted off Exit 12 and continued through the scene of the previous crash, state police said. As the teen approached the scene he struck an unoccupied state Department of Transportation vehicle that was parked in the center lane, according to state police.

The teen was thrown from the bike and slid across the pavement before he collided with a metal beam guardrail post, state police said. He was taken in an ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital for serious injuries. The boy’s condition was not immediately clear.

The crash remains under investigation.

The collision involving the teen came less than two hours after a 36-year-old Southington man was headed north on I-91 when he sideswiped two vehicles and was thrown from the motorcycle he was riding, according to state police. The man was thrown into a guardrail and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was also taken to Yale New Haven Hospital.

That crash remains under investigation.
