Before the academic year wrapped up, second-graders at Sloatsburg Elementary School spent time creating self-portraits.
The identity self-portrait project, according to K-2 art teacher Melissa Inhaber, focuses on exploring all aspects of a child's identity.
"Students wrote and chose their own character trait terms to write in the background of their project," Inhaber said. Then, students were able to give feedback to each other about their self-portraits.

The finished paintings were displayed together, similar to an art gallery, where students could walk around and enjoy the pieces. Students were also encouraged to give feedback to their fellow classmates about their self-portraits.

The project focused on developing a sense of self, according to Inhaber, and allowed students an opportunity to explore many aspects of who they are and express themselves in their artwork.
"And also in the future it can serve as a positive reminder so they can take a look at their self-portrait and see some of the positive attributes written in the background and realize oh yes I am brave, I am kind, I am responsible," she said.
