The Kansas City Royals made another roster move Wednesday after acquiring reliever Nate Pearson from the Houston Astros, designating outfielder Kameron Misner for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.
Kansas City acquired Pearson in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Max Martin. Because Pearson was out of minor league options, the Royals needed to create immediate roster space after completing the trade.
Misner appeared in 18 games for Kansas City this season, batting .220 with a .256 on-base percentage while striking out 17 times in 41 at-bats. The 28-year-old also spent time in the majors after Kyle Isbel landed on the injured list earlier this summer.
Pearson gives the Royals another experienced bullpen arm after posting a 3.60 ERA and 1.40 WHIP across 16 relief appearances with Houston. The former first-round pick returned earlier this season after dealing with elbow soreness and has continued to feature an upper-90s fastball.
The move also comes as Kansas City continues to navigate injuries elsewhere on the roster. Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was recently placed on the 10-day injured list with lower back tightness, leaving the club without one of its most productive players during a difficult stretch.
Kansas City improved to 42-60 after Tuesday's 3-2 win over the San Francisco Giants but remains last in the American League Central, 12 games behind the first-place Chicago White Sox. Meanwhile, Houston sits 49-54, three games behind the Texas Rangers in the American League West.
Adding Pearson strengthens the Royals' bullpen immediately while the club evaluates its roster ahead of the trade deadline. Designating Misner for assignment provided the roster flexibility needed to complete the transaction and bring the hard-throwing reliever to Kansas City.
