Braves finally lose Carlos Carrasco after shuffling him back and forth all season long

The affectionate term "the Gwinnett Shuttle" around Atlanta Braves fans is a reference to the team's strong willingness to shuffle certain players back and forth from Triple-A Gwinnett. Most of the time, the players involved are arms, with Jesse Chavez probably being the most famous example, although he was far from the only one. However, in 2026, it has been Carlos Carrasco that has been shuffled around the most by a WIDE margin.

The reasons for that make sense. The Braves don't have a lot of guys on their pitching staff with minor league options, but they still needed to rotate in fresh arms when their rotation began to collapse. No team seemed interested in claiming Carrasco off of waivers, so designating him for assignment over and over again was the easiest solution.

However, Carrasco isn't a solution for the Braves' roster flexibility anymore, but not for the reason you may think. On Wednesday, it was revealed that Carrasco is headed overseas after signing a deal with play in Korea.

Braves have to find another roster flexibility solution now that Carlos Carrasco is headed for the KBO

First of all, hopefully Carrasco does well over in Korea. He was clearly looking for more stability and playing time, which was a big ask in MLB at this stage of his career. By signing in the KBO, he will almost certainly see a lot more playing time and won't have to worry about getting put on the Braves' roster rollercoaster anymore. He was a class act and Braves fans should wish him nothing but the best.

Unfortunately, it does create a bit of a roster quandry for the Braves. Carrasco wasn't good and his production won't be missed, but Atlanta does not have a wealth of options available to them to make roster moves right now without risking losing depth guys permanently. Most of the players they have that still have minor league options are not guys the Braves are going to option because they are too important.

Thankfully, the trade deadline is coming soon and it does create an opportunity for Atlanta to make moves to add players that have the type of roster flexibility they need. Such players may not look like sexy additions at first glance, but they hopefully will be able to fill the niche role once occupied by Carrasco as well or better than he did.
