The Pittsburgh Steelers are roughly a week away from players reporting to training camp. The Mike McCarthy era will begin with his first training camp as the Steelers’ head coach. The team has made several changes across the coaching staff and roster. One of their rookie wide receivers was recently asked about the team’s outlook for 2026. He responded with high praise and set expectations early.

Germie Bernard was selected in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, with Pittsburgh even trading up to acquire him. Bernard joined Big Time Talks and shared his excitement about his new team.

"Bro, I ain't going to lie, we got a squad," Bernard said. "Our offense is crazy. Everybody know that we got a good defense. We got secondary, all that. We got guys on the edge, linebackers we got a squad. But now we got pieces that we needed on offense for it to thrive, and we got the system for the offense to thrive."

The Steelers have the pieces to thrive, but what are reasonable expectations?

Realistically, if the Steelers struggle and miss the playoffs, it would not be shocking. A new coaching regime, questions throughout the roster, and an aging quarterback who could potentially hit a decline at any moment create the possibility of a difficult season. Many national media members may look at that scenario and believe it is the most likely outcome. However, that is far from the only possibility. If anything, the Steelers should expect their defense to improve from last season.

The offense, at least for now, remains the biggest question mark. While quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a master of this system, he has several new pieces with whom he must build chemistry. The offensive line also features some changes and will need time to develop under a new offensive line coach. If Rodgers can perform at an above-average level like he did last season, and the rest of the offense comes together, the Steelers could take a significant step forward.

McCarthy’s offense is far more pass-heavy than the previous offensive coordinator’s approach. The team will have a new offensive identity and philosophy. If things go poorly, it would not be surprising. However, neither would it be surprising if the Steelers make noticeable progress. One player who could help them take that next step is rookie receiver Germie Bernard, who has already set high expectations for himself and his new team.

If there is one piece who could help elevate the Steelers’ offense beyond Rodgers, McCarthy, and their top two receivers, it is Bernard.

Defenses will likely focus on limiting DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr., and Pat Freiermuth. That is a significant challenge, but if those players draw heavy attention, Bernard could find himself with opportunities to make an impact.

Bernard has already drawn comparisons to one of Rodgers’ former favorite receivers. If there is a player he could try to emulate, it would be Randall Cobb. Cobb was a dependable receiver known for his reliable hands and ability to create plays after the catch.

Bernard will need to spend time developing trust and chemistry with Rodgers, but if he can accomplish that, he could become a valuable piece who elevates the entire Steelers offense.
