Meechie Johnson Jr. recently played at Ohio State and does have a connection to LeBron James, who is the talk of the NBA right now. Did the Johnson family potentially leave the news of where James will be signing?

Meechie Johnson Jr. recently played at Ohio State and does have a connection to LeBron James, who is the talk of the NBA right now. Did the Johnson family potentially leave the news of where James will be signing?

LeBron James’ free agency decision has dominated the NBA offseason, and a Cleveland connection with one-time ties to Ohio State basketball may have provided a hint about where the all-time leading scorer will play in his 24th season. James is a free agent after spending the last eight years with the Los Angeles Lakers, and the NBA world is growing impatient as the process stretches into its third week.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, and Golden State Warriors have all been mentioned as potential landing spots. However, one name from the Cleveland basketball community has added fuel to the speculation that James could be returning to Northeast Ohio for a third stint.

Sonny Johnson’s connection to LeBron James and Ohio State

Sonny Johnson, the high school basketball coach at Garfield Heights High School in Cleveland, grew up with James. Johnson is also the uncle of Meechie Johnson Jr., who played at Ohio State on two separate occasions. The elder Johnson recently hinted that James could be headed back to Cleveland, and his proximity to the James family makes the comment worth paying attention to.

Meechie Johnson has been open about James being like an uncle to him, so the families share a legit connection. You wouldn’t think Sonny Johnson would put this kind of rumor out there and risk upsetting folks around the Cleveland area unless he has a good feeling about LeBron’s plans.

Meechie Johnson’s Ohio State and college basketball career

Mechie Johnson Jr. was originally a part of Ohio State’s 2021 recruiting class before reclassifying into the 2020 class. He spent two seasons with the Buckeyes before transferring to South Carolina, where he played from 2022 to 2024. Johnson returned to Ohio State for the 2024-25 season but played just 10 games before finishing last season back at South Carolina, where he started 32 games and averaged 17.2 points per game along with 4.3 assists.

The Johnson family’s relationship with James is out there, and Sonny’s willingness to float this possibility publicly carries weight because of that closeness.

What comes next for LeBron James and the Cavaliers

James’ decision has dragged on for weeks now, and there’s no confirmed timeline for when he will announce his plans. The Cavaliers would obviously welcome the return of their franchise icon, and the fan base overlap between Ohio State and Cleveland makes this a story worth tracking for Buckeye fans as well.

Time will tell whether Johnson’s hint holds any real weight, but the connection to Cleveland and James makes it difficult to ignore.
