Ridley Scott is gearing up to release his next sci-fi epic, The Dog Stars, but it's the director's 2010s masterpiece that's making a comeback on streaming. Paul Mescal was supposed to lead The Dog Stars, following his successful turn in Gladiator II, but Jacob Elordi took over after Mescal stepped away due to scheduling conflicts. The film also stars Josh Brolin and Margaret Qualley, and releases in theaters on Aug 28. Like all of Scott's films, The Dog Stars has a fantastic cast. But, it's safe to say his best cast was assembled for a 2015 sci-fi hit. Led by Matt Damon (who currently stars in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey), said epic is now soaring up the streaming charts.
Released 11 years ago, Ridley Scott's The Martian is currently streaming on Prime Video, and it's one of the biggest movies on streaming right now. Ryan Gosling's sci-fi epic Project Hail Mary is currently the biggest film on the platform, after making its streaming debut at the start of July. But, against some very strong competition, The Martian has fought its way into the weekly top 100. At the time of writing, The Martian is the tenth most popular film on Prime Video, sitting behind Jason Statham's A Working Man in ninth, and World War Z in eighth.
Speaking of Project Hail Mary, the film shares an author with The Martian, as both films are based on books penned by acclaimed sci-fi writer Andy Weir. Adapted by Drew Goddard, The Martian also has a similar plot to Matt Damon's The Odyssey, as the actor plays a man desperate to get home after a long voyage. Instead of Ancient Greece, and facing mythical creatures, Damon plays Mark Watney, an astronaut and botanist stuck on Mars after a mission went wrong. To get home, he must face humanity's scariest enemy: science.
'The Martian's Cast Is S-Tier
Ridley Scott, being one of the most acclaimed and well-known directors, can pretty much get any actor he wants. For The Martian, he assembled a who's who of Hollywood talent, with giant stars even stepping up to play minor roles in the film. Alongside Matt Damon, the film also stars Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Donald Glover, Nick Mohammed, Mackenzie Davis, and many more.
That exceptional cast, when combined with a fantastic script and Ridley Scott at the helm, led to sensational reviews for The Martian. The film holds a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score. Audiences seem to agree with that consensus, as its RT user rating also sits at 91%.
'The Dog Stars' Is a New Step for Ridley Scott
It might not be his most hyped movie. In fact, the marketing feels a bit flat, but The Dog Stars is Ridley Scott's first proper foray into the post-apocalyptic sub-genre of sci-fi. Based on Peter Heller's novel of the same name, a flu has wiped out almost all of humanity. Surviving at an abandoned airfield, Hig (Elordi) risks everything when he discovers a mysterious radio signal.
