10 years after its original release, the Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone-led La La Land is heading back to theaters.
After delivering the Academy Award-winning, drumming-focused psychological drama Whiplash in 2014, writer and director Damien Chazelle followed that up two years later with La La Land. The Los Angeles-based musical about a jazz pianist and an actor falling in love was also successful, with its many accomplishments including making over $504 million at the worldwide box office. Now, La La Land will once again play on big screens for its 10th anniversary.
Lionsgate has announced that that starting August 16, La La Land will play in Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres locations. Advance tickets can be purchased now, though it’s unclear exactly how long this release will last. La La Land’s return to theaters happens two days after new movies like The End of Oak Street, The Rivals of Amziah King, and The Wrong Girls begin their theatrical runs.
La La Land originally came out on December 9, 2016, the same day as the Paramount Pictures comedy Office Christmas Party. The movie sees Gosling’s Sebastian, a musician who wants to open his own jazz club, and Stone’s Mia, an aspiring actor, romantically bonding while attempting to fulfill their professional dreams. The supporting cast includes John Legend, J.K. Simmons, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Finn Wittrock. Justin Hurwitz composed La La Land’s score, as well as wrote the songs with lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
The musical quickly earned critical acclaim across the board, from its performance and direction, to the choreography and costumes. ScreenRant’s La La Land review rated the movie nine out of 10 stars, calling it “a proper crowd-pleaser and a heartfelt salute to old Hollywood that harkens back to the past in order to create something fresh and exciting - rather than wax nostalgic about history.”La La Land boasts a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes’ critic-driven Tomatometer, and an 82% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.
La La Land went on to win six Academy Awards among 14 nominations, including Best Director, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Production Design. Prior to this, the musical won all seven of its nominations at the Golden Globes, a record-breaking achievement. La La Land’s other accolades include winning eight Critics’ Choice Awards, five British Academy Film Awards, and two Grammys.
In 2023, it was announced that La La Land would be adapted into a Broadway musical, with Hurwitz, Pasek, and Paul returning to write new songs, and Bartlett Sher directing off a book written by Ayad Akhtar and Matthew Decker. However, there have been no recent updates on that project’s progress.
La La Land’s re-release follows five months after Gosling starred in the film adaptation of Andy Weir’s sci-fi novel Project Hail Mary, while Stone starred last year in Eddington and Bugonia. Chazelle followed La La Land with 2018’s First Man and 2022’s Babylon, and the next Chazelle-helmed movie, which doesn’t have a title yet, is a 1940s-set prison drama starring Daniel Craig, Cillian Murphy, and Michelle Williams.
