The Cincinnati Reds opened the second half of the season by winning two of three over the Colorado Rockies. Still, the team is well outside the playoff picture, and the Reds are going to be selling at the MLB Trade Deadline.
While the Reds will be selling, what they will be selling and for what in return could be surprising, according to Ken Rosenthal speaking on Fair Territory.
“The Cincinnati Reds. They are a more obvious seller. And I reported with Trent Rosecrans over the weekend that they are open for business now. They’re focused mostly on the rentals. They’ve got quite a few. But the interesting thing about the Reds, and Trent learned this in talking to some of their people, is that they are open also to adding controllable players the way they did two previous times when they were sellers.” Rosenthal said. “In 2009, they brought in future Hall of Famer Scott Rolen. That was the year they were selling. In 2019, they brought in future Cy Young winner Trevor Bower. Same kind of situation.”

The Reds have multiple players who are set to be free agents at the end of the season, as well as three players with options at the end of this season.
“So, while the Reds can talk about Brady Singer, who’s been really hot of late, 2.64 WRA in his last eight starts, and they can talk about other rentals as well, Eugenio Suarez, Nathaniel Lowe, Tyler Stevenson, and maybe even they can talk about some of their starting pitchers under control, Lodolo, maybe even Hunter Greene. They’re going to be focused on the rentals. They’re going to be focused on trying to get better,” Rosenthal continued. “They’ve got other pieces people want. Spencer Steer, JJ Bleday, but at some point you can’t trade everyone. You can’t trade your entire team. You have to play the rest of the season, the final two months, and you have to point toward a better 2027 if, of course, there is going to be a 2027.”
Spencer Steer and JJ Bleday are two of the more likely sought-after targets. Both players are also under control through the 2028 season before entering free agency. The Reds are likely not looking to move them, instead building around them, along with others such as Elly De La Cruz, Sal Stewart, and Chase Burns. Still, the Reds need to find a new direction with the disappointment of this season.
So, the Cincinnati Reds, a team that started the season 20 and 11, has gone 25 and 42 since. They’ve been terrible. They’ve been terrible in a division where three other teams with similar resources. The Cardinals, Pirates, and Brewers have all had different measures of success. Those teams have all played well. Look, every one of them is above .500. The Brewers have the second-best record in the National League. So, for the Reds, no excuses. They have not had a good run here. So, I would expect with Cincinnati, they’re going to sell and sell pretty big,” Rosenthal concluded.
