Life cannot get much better for United States Champion Trick Williams, who just got married to Lash Legend and is one of the stars of WWE: Unreal Season 3.
However, things weren’t always this peachy. A standout walk-on football player for the South Carolina Gamecocks, Williams attempted to try out for the Philadelphia Eagles at their rookie minicamp in 2018 to no avail.
Like football, WWE is similarly competitive, and there are a finite number of roster spots (especially in the main roster scene). Williams knows how “cutthroat” it can be, and he saw the similarities between his NFL and WWE stints.

“Man, having a career in the NFL is very cutthroat, and these spots and opportunities aren’t promised at all,” he said to ClutchPoints. “And funnily enough, it’s the same thing in the WWE Universe. A lot of us, we grow an emotional attachment to so many people and all these different characters, but at the same time, it’s still a business. It’s very similar to any business out there. It’s very cutthroat, and everybody can’t stay forever.”
Why filming WWE: Unreal was “unreal”
Filming WWE: Unreal Season 3 was an “unreal experience,” though the sly Williams claims there was “no pun intended.” He was more than happy to let fans in and get to know Matrick Belton.
“People were like, ‘Are they invading your space?’ Not at all,” Williams reassured. “You turn those cameras on, you get a deeper look into who Trick is, and Trick is an extension of who Matrick already is, so I have no problem with people diving in.
“Turn that camera [on] a little bit longer to see Trick, because once you see Trick and Matrick, you’ll understand Trick a little bit more, and I’m okay with that,” he added.
It probably helps that Williams’ wife, Legend, really wants to headline a reality TV show. This is something The Miz and Maryse have done (their show was called Miz & Mrs), and more recently, Bianca Belair and Montez Ford had their own show, Love & WWE. Everyone also remembers Total Divas (and its spin-off, Total Bellas).
“Don’t tell her that,” Williams said in response to the idea of starring in a WWE couples reality series, “because that’s her lifelong dream. She wants to do the reality TV thing.”
The reigning United States Champion would oblige his wife’s dreams, but he’s got bigger goals. He is “here to wrestle and be a Superstar,” but he is open to starring in a reality series if fans want it.
“Who knows? If that’s what the people want, we can look into it,” Williams said before conceding, “but that’s what the Legend wants.”
Why Lil Yachty works as a celebrity face in WWE
Over the last couple of years, celebrities appearing in WWE have been a hot topic. There have been good ones, like Logan Paul, who’s now a full-fledged member of the roster, and some polarizing ones, like Pat McAfee’s involvement in WrestleMania 42 (which WWE: Unreal Season 3 discusses).
Beginning earlier this year, rapper Lil Yachty has started managing Williams, accompanying him to the ring most nights. Unlike some of the other celebs, Yachty appears to be warmly received by fans. Williams has an idea of why Yachty has clicked with audiences unlike other celebrities.
“He loves the business, and that’s very important,” Williams explained. “He loves the business, and Trick Willy loves the business. With that alone, we’re already on the same page, because we wanna be great at the business.”
They met before Yachty began managing him, but it’s become a close-knit bond. Williams excitedly called Yachty his “dog,” and he enjoys having him by his side.
“That’s my dog; that’s my friend. I get to have my friend pop up on TV with me every Friday, and I’m his friend, so he gets to come support his boy and live his dream of being a WWE Superstar every single week,” the United States Champion said.
Lil Yachty is getting ready for a match
Could this lead to a match involving Yachty? It’s already in the works, as the rapper has been in the WWE Performance Center, training with Williams.
“We’re training at the Performance Center all the time; we’re doing push-ups, we’re working out at the hotels, doing everything we can to make sure that Yachty is ready to have a match — a tag team match, a championship match, whatever he needs when the time is right,” he articulated.
Their connection and friendship are “why it works on TV,” according to the US Champ. As for when a match with Yachty could take place, Williams cunningly teased, “Stay tuned.”
What’s next for Trick Williams after WWE: Unreal Season 3?
Looking ahead, Williams is going to continue his ascension up the card. He is going to continue getting better at his craft, and don’t expect him to drop the United States Championship anytime soon.
As of the time of this writing, he is without a match at SummerSlam, which takes place from Aug. 1-2 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He appears confident he’ll make the card, though.
At WrestleMania 42, Williams’ coat during his entrance included a long train. The WrestleMania ramp is always long, and his train nearly covered all of it. Somehow, he plans on topping it.
“That was a pretty cool one,” Williams said of his WrestleMania 42 entrance before teasing, “but you’ve gotta stay tuned for SummerSlam, ’cause SummerSlam will be special, you know what I mean? Let’s talk about it. Look, this mind right here, I’ve got ideas for days. It’s only gonna get better, trust and believe that.”
He still remained tight-lipped on his SummerSlam plans. Could he run it back with Carmelo Hayes, his once mentor-turned-rival? Or maybe he’ll hold a United States Championship open challenge? Either way, expect the lemon pepper steppers to march down to the ring in Minneapolis.
“I don’t have a prediction [for SummerSlam], but I do know it will be a banger, and people [are] gonna get what they want,” he concluded.
