While the 2026 campaign has fared even worse than the 2025 season, the New York Mets are still searching for ways to right the ship. An offseason of change did not lead to the results expected by the Mets brass, which led to the firing of former manager Carlos Mendoza. Now, as the MLB trade deadline approaches, New York president of baseball operations David Stearns could move a few players off the major league roster before August 3rd. ESPN insider Jeff Passan listed several Mets players in his latest trade deadline rankings. This includes veteran starter Clay Holmes, who is working his way back from a broken leg.
“He has shot up this list because teams’ interest in him runs deep — and the only reason he’s not higher than 90% to go is due to the possibility of him remaining in New York on a contract extension,” wrote Passan. “If he does move, Holmes is a playoff-caliber starter for all of the teams with interest, a groundball machine whose minuscule home run rate would play especially well in the postseason.”
When Holmes signed with the Mets as a starter a couple of years ago, many were skeptical about his transition to the rotation. However, the former New York Yankee has impressed many, especially after a strong start to this season. Before his injury in late May, Holmes was 4-4 with a 2.39 ERA and 45 strikeouts over 52.2 innings. For almost any team looking to clinch a playoff spot, Holmes would be an intriguing addition.

Passan has listed seven teams, including multiple division leaders such as the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago White Sox, as potential fits for the righty. While Holmes is set to return to Queens as soon as his rehab assignment finishes, don’t be surprised to see him make his reemergence into the majors with a new uniform. As for a potential extension that Passan mentioned? Any of the seven teams he mentioned, plus the Mets and likely a few more squads, would be happy to show Holmes the money this winter.
