A 14-game winning streak has propelled the Boston Red Sox from the AL East basement to third in the division, just six games behind the Tampa Bay Rays. The streak has also pushed the Red Sox into the final AL Wild Card spot, with a game and a half lead over the Texas Rangers for that spot. As the MLB trade deadline approaches, ESPN insider Jeff Passan has called for the Red Sox to be “aggressive” in improving their roster. The Pat McAfee Show shared Passan’s thoughts on which positions Boston needs to address ahead of the deadline via X, formerly Twitter.
“Shortstop is a position I think of import to them, of focus to them,” stated Passan. “We added a new name to the top 100 trade candidate list. Number six is Zach Neto of the Los Angeles Angels. Now, I don’t know if it’s going to be specifically Neto. There’s an opportunity to go out and potentially get Jeremy Pena from the Houston Astros, and even CJ Abrams, who’s had a great year, but probably not a shortstop long term, could be had as well. I think the Red Sox are going to try and be aggressive.”
Passan released his updated Top 100 players who could be dealt at the trade deadline on Tuesday. The list is filled with difference makers, most notably Neto. A former first-round pick by the Angels, Neto has become one of MLB’s best shortstops. A dual threat who can top a lineup and play strong defense, adding Neto to their lineup would be a massive boost for the Red Sox.

A few weeks ago, the Red Sox looked more likely to deal pieces at the deadline. However, since starting their current streak with a sweep of Neto’s Angels, Boston could play October baseball for the second straight year. Abrams and Pena would also be solid additions to the Red Sox lineup, even if Abrams ends up playing another position long term. Whether it’s Neto, Pena, Abrams, or another piece, upgrading shortstop would certainly help the Sox’s postseason push. Will the Boston brass elect to add to a team that is peaking at the perfect time?
