It’s about time the Boston Red Sox received something resembling bad news.
Riding high on a 14-game win streak, the Red Sox haven’t dealt with many setbacks over the past two weeks. Perhaps the biggest negative they’ve had to deal with is starter Sonny Gray not getting enough love for his fine season.
On Tuesday, they finally got a reminder that baseball isn’t always as easy as it’s felt recently.
Lefthanded starting pitcher Ranger Suarez was no longer in line to start Tuesday’s game as scheduled, Red Sox manager Chad Tracy told reporters Monday night after his team’s 6-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Suarez was set to return from a groin strain, but the team had not decided when he will be activated, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo.
Lefthander Eduardo Rivera is scheduled to start in Suarez’s place.
Suarez, in his first season with Boston after signing as a free agent last winter, was named to the American League All-Star team but suffered his injury one day later. Between him, Garrett Crochet and Connelly Early, the Red Sox have a trio of southpaws on the injured list that most teams would envy having at the top of their rotations.
Speaking of those two, Crochet has not yet resumed throwing due to left shoulder inflammation. Early is still slated to return as early as late July, although he had yet to throw a bullpen session as of Tuesday, and then would require live batting practice or a rehab start before he could return to game action.
