Queen Camilla is celebrating her 79th birthday with a new official portrait—and it includes a meaningful piece of jewelry.
The new portrait was taken by Chris Jackson in the State Drawing Room of Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland during her royal visit in May. She wears a royal blue dress with geometric textured detailing around the neckline and an unusual zip-up design. However, the real piece of interest in the look is her glittering butterfly brooch.
“Happy Birthday to The Queen! 🎊,” read the caption. “Her Majesty has marked her birthday with a renewed commitment to supporting children’s literacy, with the announcement that every Year 6 and P6 child across the UK will be gifted a special edition of the bestselling book ‘Impossible Creatures’ by award-winning author Katherine Rundell, this Christmas.”
Camilla has been pictured wearing this diamond and sapphire brooch on a number of occasions over the years—to the Commonwealth Day service in 2006, to church on Christmas Day in 2016, for a 2024 visit to Japan, and at the 2024 Christmas tree decorating ceremony, to name a few.
As it turns out, the brooch is almost 50 years old and comes from the late Queen Elizabeth’s collection. As Buckingham Palace confirmed, the brooch was given to Elizabeth at the Birmingham Spring Fair in February 1977.
The brooch fits right into Camilla’s collection, which includes a number of insect-themed pieces—she has also been seen with a bee brooch on several occasions.
