Amazon MGM Studios has given the green light to Stillwater, a horror drama series based on the Skybound graphic novel by Chip Zdarsky and Ramón K. Pérez. The new series, which will premiere on Prime Video, has received an eight-episode order.
The project will be a collab between co-writers Greg Berlanti (You, The Flight Attendant) and Carly Wray (Watchmen, Westworld). Stillwater was first reported to be in the works in the spring of 2025, when Amazon won a bidding war with a straight-to-series order based on only a pitch.
However, the agreement was that Berlanti and Wray had to deliver a pilot script and "first-season bible," which is essentially a reference document with all the worldbuilding and character arcs, per Deadline. Based on the materials Berlanti and Wray submitted, the project has been officially cleared for production.
Stillwater is the second series this week to be greenlit for Berlanti, as Disney+ recently greenlit Afterlife With Archie, a Riverdale spinoff and comic book adaptation with Berlanti as executive producer. The news comes just before the start of San Diego Comic-Con.
What Are the Stillwater Comics About?
Stillwater is a comic book and graphic novel horror-thriller series from Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics — the same comic book publisher that releases the Invincibleand Walking Dead series. Stillwater follows ex-con Daniel West. After he loses his job, Daniel receives a strange delivery. In a mysterious letter, he's summoned to the town of Stillwater to receive a hefty inheritance from a distant relative he didn't know he had.
Daniel travels to Stillwater with his friend Tony and quickly sees a child fall to his death. But the citizens of Stillwater seem unconcerned and unfazed. That's when Daniel realizes something sinister and mysterious is afoot. They soon learn that in the town of Stillwater, nothing ever ages, no one ever dies and no one ever gets out. The official tag line for the comic reads, "Nobody dies. In the town of Stillwater, that's not just a promise. It's a threat."
Stillwater Blends Horror, Mystery, and Psychological Suspense
Creators Berlanti and Wray said they were "thrilled" to begin working on Stillwater, saying the series is "far beyond the usual immortality story." They added, "It's a horror show about a community that has to decide what forever is worth, and what they're willing to do to protect it."
Berlanti and Wray credit comic book creators Zdarsky and Pérez for creating such a "terrifying and deeply human" world, adding, "We couldn't be more excited for fans, and everyone discovering the story for the first time, to meet Daniel West and all the eerie townsfolk lying in wait for him."
"Stillwater is a truly original series that blends horror, mystery, and psychological suspense into something entirely unexpected," said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios. "Greg Berlanti, Carly Wray, and the incredible teams at WBTV and Skybound have created a world unlike anything audiences have ever seen before — one that's unsettling, emotionally rich, and impossible to look away from."
Production for Stillwater has not begun, as casting and a premiere date have not been announced.
