Few films have cast longer shadows than The Wizard of Oz (1939), with its dazzling Technicolor musical aesthetics, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), with its raw slasher horror. Both are widely regarded as two of the greatest films of all time and have influenced countless movies over the years. Now, a hit thriller that mashes up the two classic films is coming to Hulu next week.

Four years after its premiere, Pearl is releasing on Hulu next week. Directed by Ti West, who co-wrote the script with lead star Mia Goth as a prequel to X, the A24 slasher explores the origins of its titular villain, whose dream of becoming a Hollywood star collides with the realities of her family life and her growing violent impulses on their Texas farmstead in 1918.

Now, following its theatrical premiere in 2022, Pearl is coming to Hulu on August 1. The movie is not currently on any other streaming service, though it is available to buy or rent on digital platforms, such as Prime Video, from only $3.99.

Other than Mia Goth in the titular role, Pearl's cast also includes Superman star David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, Emma Jenkins-Purro, Amelia Reid-Meredith, and Alistair Sewell.

Pearl received rave reviews, resulting in a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics praising Ti West for drawing new depths of horror from the universe he built in X (2022), while once again being elevated by another standout performance from Mia Goth.

In a review from The Fordham Ram, Hannah Bradford described Pearl as "The Wizard of Oz meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre in all the best ways possible," referring to the movie's unique blend of classic Technicolor musical aesthetics and slasher horror.

It also has an 83% score from audiences, who agree that Pearl's uneven storyline is overshadowed by Mia Goth's outstanding performance, which elevates Ti West's unsettling atmosphere and makes the movie a memorable horror experience.

Mia Goth stars in The Odyssey as Melantho, Penelope's disloyal maidservant.

At the box office, Pearl grossed just over $10 million worldwide, which would be considered a success if reports of its roughly $1 million production budget are true. Though other reports, and the film's producer, have suggested it actually landed closer to $8 million due to backend net costs and tax credits, meaning it would not be nearly as profitable.

Whether you're in it for the scares, the style, or Mia Goth's wild performance, Pearl is ready to bring its twisted charm to Hulu.
