North Texans might notice a new face on WFAA-TV (Channel 8) this month.
"The new chapter begins today!" Erin Heft wrote in a Facebook post on Monday.
Heft is a Texas native who comes to Channel 8 from KCRA 3 in Sacramento, where she was a morning news reporter and fill-in anchor. She spent five years at the station, where she first interned in 2018.
Heft announced her departure from Sacramento for her "dream position" in Dallas via Instagram in late June.
"Five years ago, I arrived in Sacramento with a car packed with everything I couldn't live without, knowing a handful of people, and having landed a job in my dream newsroom full of some of the most talented people in the industry," she wrote. "This week, I leave with a heart full of gratitude."
Heft told viewers she was "filled with grief" but excited for the next chapter in her career.
"I never thought this day would come," Heft said on KCRA 3. "Dallas is very close to my family and it is a massive jump in news markets."
Heft received scores of comments on her post from admirers.
"Erin - you covered so many stories in Sacramento," one commenter wrote. "Your professionalism and heart will always be remembered."
Heft covered wildfires, snowstorms and Sacramento's K Street shooting in her time at KCRA 3. She graduated from Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 2019. She spent almost three years working with E.W. Scripps Co. as a multimedia journalist and fill-in anchor before returning to KCRA 3 in 2021.
At Channel 8 in Dallas, Heft will work as a reporter on the day shift Tuesday through Friday and at night on Saturday, according to a spokeswoman for the station.
Heft's arrival comes on the heels of several changes at the station. Reporter Tiffany Liou left on July 1 while morning show Daybreak gained two new anchors in Matt Howerton and Dia Wall in February.
