GENESEE COUNTY, MI — Genesee County Animal Care, located at 4351 W. Pasadena Avenue in Flint Township, has many pets currently available for adoption.
Here are two of them looking for their forever home.

We would like to take a moment to paint the heartbreaking but honest reality for a very special girl named Avery.

Imagine a world where everyone you’ve ever loved has left you behind. A world where you weren’t considered important enough to fight for. A world where the rug got pulled out from under you every single time you started to feel like you were on steady ground.
A series of disappointments, failed commitments and empty promises consistently resulted in you ending up back at a shelter without a home or family to call your own.
You didn’t do anything wrong. You just haven’t been given the guidance or tools in life to thrive, and because of that, you require a bit more patience, time and understanding.
Naturally, you develop a fear of abandonment and when you do find someone, you hold on for dear life.
You panic when they leave, even if only to make a quick trip to the store. You sleep with one open, praying that your person will still be there when you wake up.
You try to stay positive and you hope that you will never have to experience the devastating heartbreak ever again, but, despite everything, it happens again and you’re left alone — utterly confused and wondering what you did wrong and why you’re so difficult to love.
This is what Avery’s life has been like so far.
After arriving at Genesee County Animal Care as an underweight stray, she has been bounced around through a series of adoptions and returns. Separation anxiety has become a challenge that she’s working on as the repeated offenses of abandonment have stacked up.
Avery is currently in a foster home as she could not handle being in a kennel at the shelter for 23.5 hours a day.
The moment a volunteer walked away from her, panic and anguish set in. She panted, barked, climbed her kennel door and accidentally harmed herself amidst the anxious behaviors.
Her time in a foster home has been exactly what she needs. She’s comfortable, cozy and so loved. She’s learning so much. She’s working on her confidence and her separation anxiety.
She is, slowly but surely, making progress. But here’s the thing, her time in a foster home is not without a deadline.
Avery needs to find her true forever family sooner rather than later. She will not be able to handle coming back to the shelter and starting all over at square one again.
She is a wonderful dog who has overcome so much.
Avery is absolutely adorable, so smart, and incredibly loving. She is the best companion and sweetest little princess ever. She will bring someone so much happiness.
We’re looking for a calmer home where Avery is able to be the one and only pet (no other dogs or cats). She loves people and is good with children of all ages (meets required with kids under five).
She would love to find someone who spends a bit more time at home and who will continue working with her on her separation anxiety. She just needs to be able to finally trust that her people aren’t going anywhere and that she’s finally home.
Avery is about 1.5 years old and 54 pounds. She is potty-trained and already knows some commands including ‘sit’ and ‘shake’.
She takes treats nicely and listens well. She can be timid and cowers with quick movements and loud noises, so she may have experienced abuse in the past.
Avery is a playful, silly love bug who deserves the whole world.

Mae West
Meet this amazing gal, Mae West.
This wonderful kitty is the best of both worlds. She’s stunningly beautiful and incredibly sweet.
She didn’t arrive in the best shape, but she’s ready to hit the reset button with a patient, committed forever family.
Mae West is litter trained, spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped.
Adoption fees are as follows: $40 for dogs, $20 for cats, $65 for kittens. Genesee County residents do have to pay an additional $10 for the dog license.
There’s no application to fill out ahead of time, and no appointment is necessary.
Interested adopters can come in anytime during business hours to adopt, but staff recommends adopters give themselves at least an hour for the process.
