Percy Jackson and the Olympians Boss Warns Season 3 Is the 'Darkest' Entry Yet: 'The Next Step Is Death'

The popular fantasy show is maturing alongside its cast.

Just like with the Harry Potter films, audiences will notice that Percy Jackson is getting darker with each new season. With Season 3's return date confirmed, series lead Walker Scobell and executive producer Craig Silverstein teased what fans can expect from the first adaptation of The Titan's Curse.

The Stakes Are Once Again Raised in Percy Jackson Season 3

"It’s definitely our darkest season yet," Scobell told Entertainment Weekly. "When you’re reading the books, the first [The Lightning Thief] gets you into it, and then The Titan’s Curse is when it really hooks into the meat of the story."

Silverstein added that the overall tone of the third season has matured alongside its cast. "We had a lot more blood in season 2 than we had in season 1, and now the next step is death, right? People are dying, and the stakes just keep dialing up, and getting more real," he teased.

Percy Jackson Season 3 is based on Rick Riordan's The Titan's Curse. First published in 2007, the third Percy Jackson novel finds its title hero embarking on a dangerous quest with his friends to rescue Annabeth and the Greek goddess Artemis, who have both been kidnapped by the army of Kronos.

"[The Titan’s Curse is] really where all the final pieces come onto the board related to Great Prophecy and Kronos," Silverstein shared. "The Titans make their appearance. It’s the book and the season where the larger saga really comes into focus."

The Percy Jackson EP added, "It’s always been there in the background. We’ve brought it forward more in the show, and this is where the conflict — the war — really starts to kick off."

Percy Jackson Is 1 of Disney+'s Biggest Shows

Since its premiere in December 2023, Percy Jackson has routinely been on Disney+'s Top 10 TV Shows chart. The show's continued success will no doubt be taken into consideration when it's time for it to be renewed or canceled.

While Percy Jackson got an early Season 3 renewal months ahead of its Season 2 premiere, there's no word yet from Disney+ on a Season 4. However, with Percy Jackson hosting its own panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thurs., July 23, that would be the perfect place to confirm the future of the series.

Percy Jackson needs just two more seasons to wrap up the original book series. A fourth season would adapt The Battle of the Labyrinth, while the fifth would tackle The Last Olympian.

Riordan has written two new Percy Jackson and the Olympians novels, subtitled The Senior Year Adventures, with a third on the way. If the adaptation remains popular, Disney+ may want to adapt them next.

There's also The Heroes of Olympus five-book series, which takes place between the original Percy Jackson novels and The Senior Year Adventures and introduces Roman demigods and Gaea to the universe. Plenty of opportunities should Disney+ decide to remain in business with Riordan.

The first two seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians are streaming on Disney+. The third season premieres on the streamer on Nov. 20.
