Multiple former All Blacks have chastised Ireland, including calling out Peter O’Mahony, after their win over Andy Farrell’s side last Saturday.
In the third and final test of this summer’s Nations Championship fixtures, Ireland had a poor first-half performance en route to a 40-21 hiding from the All Blacks in Eden Park, the fourth game in a row Farrell’s side have lost to New Zealand.
The defeat has been cause for celebration among those in New Zealand, who since Ireland’s first win over the All Blacks in 2016 have relished the opportunities to put the side down a peg or two when they can.
The first to relish the victory was former All Black Murray Mexted, who was on the DSPN podcast with Martin Devlin, who felt that Ireland unwarrantedly fancied themselves heading into the game. ‘Then the third game, well, of course, this is an Irish team that really rate themselves big time in the global game, and I think they overrate themselves a bit actually, to be frank. And that was probably exposed on the weekend.
‘Are they as good as they were two or three years ago? I don’t think so. I think they are a team that’s a very, very good rugby team, but where’s the X-factor in that team?’
The next one to take a shot was Justin Marshall, who took aim at Peter O’Mahony and the Virgin Media punditry team for their verdict on the refereeing of Nic Berry.
O’Mahony in particular felt that Berry had a poor game, not allowing enough competition in the breakdown for both sides, and felt that the TMO came to the wrong decision in both Luke Jacobson’s bunker review and Quinn Tupaea’s deliberate knock-on not being a yellow card.
However, despite O’Mahony reiterating that he felt the refereeing was poor for both sides, Marshall still fired a shot for the ‘whingy’ Irish.
‘They’ve also turned into a pack of whingers, to be honest,’ Marshall said on The Good, The Bad, and The Rugby: Australia & New Zealand. ‘They feel like their performance wasn’t up to standard, but it’s everyone else’s fault.
‘They’ve been blaming a couple of decisions within the game, going “we were ripped off, the All Blacks cheated, they always get the favourable decisions at Eden Park, there was this and that”.
‘Mate, we didn’t make you drop the ball f*****g 15 times. Do you know how many tackles they fell off?’
He continued: ‘They were falling off tackles like that, but they go straight towards Quinn Tupaea should have been a yellow card, and Jacobson should have been red.
‘You know what guys? Sort out your own s**t first.’
This was followed then by John Kirwan on yet another podcast claiming Joe McCarthy faked an injury when New Zealand were attacking, when upon further inspection it’s clear he was trying to change a contact lens.
It feels like the All Blacks in the media aren’t particularly fond of Ireland.
