While SUVs continue to dominate the European market, one compact electric hatchback has become an absolute hit in China.
The Geely E2, which is also sold in some markets under the names Geely EX2, Geely Galaxy Xingyuan, or Geome Xingyuan, was the best-selling car in China during 2025 and, according to current data, has maintained its leading position this year as well.
According to estimates that have not yet been officially confirmed, the Geely E2 found as many as 244,000 buyers in the first six months of this year. It surpassed the Tesla Model Y (215,000 units), Xiaomi SU7 (182,000), and Leapmotor A10 (171,000).
Why is it so popular?
What makes this achievement particularly interesting is that it is a traditional five-door hatchback rather than an SUV. In a market where 63 percent of sales come from electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and range-extender models (NEVs), Geely’s compact model has shown that practicality and an affordable price can still beat the trend of high-riding crossovers.
The Geely E2 is 4.13 meters long, placing it near the top of the B-segment electric hatchback category. It is larger than models such as the Renault 5 and Peugeot E-208, while its 2.65-meter wheelbase promises a more spacious interior than expected for a vehicle of this class.
In China, the starting price is 64,800 CNY, or around €8,350 at the current exchange rate. That is only slightly more expensive than the small Wuling Hongguang Mini EV and cheaper than the BYD Seagull, which is sold in Europe as the Dolphin Surf and costs around €9,000 in China.
For comparison, the Tesla Model Y in China starts at a minimum of 263,500 CNY, or around €34,000.
Good equipment for a reasonable price
Geely has not cut corners on equipment. The E2 comes standard with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.6-inch HD infotainment display, Full LED lights, adaptive cruise control, a 375-liter trunk that expands to 1,320 liters with the rear seats folded, and an additional 70-liter front trunk.
The powertrain is simple: a single electric motor drives the rear wheels, while energy comes from LFP batteries, known for their long lifespan and lower production costs.
Depending on the version, the claimed range is between 252 and 345 kilometers, which is enough for everyday city and suburban driving.
Available to European buyers
The Geely E2 is no longer limited to the Chinese market. The car has arrived in Europe, with an example being Italy, where its starting price is €20,900.
It remains to be seen whether the car that won over Chinese buyers can achieve the same success on the European market, where competition in the affordable electric vehicle segment is becoming stronger every month.
