The tragic murder of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, allegedly at the hands of their son Nick Reiner, left Hollywood in shock and the Reiner family facing unspeakable grief. Nick Reiner was arrested for the murders and charged, and could face either life in prison or even the death penalty. And though his siblings have, understandably, turned their back on him, someone apparently hasn't: his aunt, Annie Reiner.
According to Hollywood insider Rob Shuter, this has caused issues in the family. "This family is at war," one insider told the gossip columnist's Naughty But Nice. "Some relatives see Nick as a deeply troubled man who needs compassion. Others see him as the man accused of taking away two people they loved. Those positions are impossible to reconcile."
Reportedly, Annie, Rob Reiner's sister, has continued to visit her nephew Nick in jail and is trying to support him as he deteriorates behind bars. And Nick's siblings are reportedly having a hard time reconciling this with the reality they are living in.
"Jake and Romy didn't just lose their parents," another source says. "Now they're watching their own aunt stand by the man prosecutors say killed them. Whether Annie believes Nick is mentally ill or innocent doesn't change how painful that is for them."
And this is not nearly over. Nick Reiner will get a trial, and that means his siblings might end up testifying. And any trial will likely be very difficult for all members of the family.
"This trial is going to tear the family apart even more," one source said. "Every day in court will force relatives to choose sides. Some relationships may never recover."
Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty to his parents' murder and is currently awaiting trial.
"Two lives were lost," one insider said. "Now an entire family risks losing each other, too."
All of this comes after new reports of Nick Reiner's deterioration. "Nick no longer looks like Nick," an insider close to the Reiner family told the Daily Mail in July 2026. "He is rapidly deteriorating. No one would recognize him. He is almost bald because they have to keep his hair super short to keep the bugs out, and he is super skinny because of the intense medication he is on. His eyes are very sunken in."'
Reiner, who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, has been held in a mental health unit in solitary confinement at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles since December.
"Nick has not been well for many years, but before jail, some of his personality could be recognized. Not now. He is like a babbling child, totally out of it," the source explained. "It's so bad his lawyers have a hard time talking to him.
Reportedly, "because of his mental health condition, Nick cannot mix with other inmates, which means he is alone all the time with his own dark thoughts. It is extremely unhealthy."
"He is not all there," a source claimed. "He doesn't know what year it is or who is the president of the United States. He cannot process reality or focus."
