A new poll shows a potential general election contest between Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and Democrat Troy Jackson within the margin of error, while Democrat Hannah Pingree holds a double-digit lead in Maine’s race for governor.
The Pine Tree State Poll, released Tuesday by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, found 49% of likely voters would support Jackson in a head-to-head Senate matchup, compared with 46% for Collins. Two percent selected another candidate and 3% were undecided.

Jackson has not formally secured the Democratic nomination. The Maine Democratic Party will hold a nominating convention Saturday to replace Graham Platner, who withdrew after winning the June primary.
Collins, who is seeking a sixth term, was unopposed for the Republican nomination.
Voters gave Collins her strongest ratings for bringing federal money to Maine, with 53% describing her performance as good or very good. Majorities, however, rated her poorly on key legislative votes and her confirmation votes involving Cabinet nominees and Supreme Court justices.
In the governor’s race, Pingree led Republican Bobby Charles 49% to 35%. Independent Rick Bennett received 6%, and 8% remained undecided.
Pingree and Charles emerged from crowded primary fields.
The poll surveyed 1,236 Maine residents online from July 15 through July 20. The full survey had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points. The likely general election voter sample included 1,178 respondents.
